Taking Valerian Root Tea to Help With Sleep

I’m desperate for a cure or a treatment for my insomnia!
I’m doing all of the things necessary for basic sleep hygiene…
- waking up at the same time every morning
- going to bed at the same time every night
- getting lots of light in the morning
- having a routine to get ready for sleep at night
- turning off the TV and computer an hour before bed
- a bunch of others
… but they seem to have little (or no) effect on my sleep. I’m awakened several times each night, and although I may “log the hours” in bed, and get 5-6 hours of “sleep”, it’s interrupted so many times that it’s hardly restful.
So now I’m looking for anything that might work.
In a recent TV program, there was a segment on insomnia cures. I’d tried most of them (they were basically the sleep hygiene list), but there’s one I hadn’t looked in to yet – valerian root.
Valerian Root – An Ancient Remedy For Insomnia
Normally I’m very skeptical about “folklore” remedies of any kind. But after some quick research, I found that valerian root came up all the time. Valerian root has been mentioned as far back as Hippocrates for it’s sleep-inducing properties, and has been studied extensively in modern experiments.
It appears that some doctors even recommend trying valerian root for sleep and anxiety (hysteria, nervousness, etc) before putting patients on the heavy-duty drugs like Xanax or Valium.
Valerian is a flowing plant (perenial) native to parts of Asia and to most of Europe. The roots of the plant have a sedative property – so that’s what’s used in the different valerian preparations.
Valerian can be bought two different ways – either as a supplement preparation (which contains a concentration of the root in a tablet or capsule) from a vitamin company – or as a tea, mixed in with other herbs.
Valerian Root Tea for Insomnia
I’ve decided to try taking the tea before bed, to see if it has any effect on the quality of my sleep.
The research shows that valerian root both improves the time to get to sleep initially, and reduces the time it takes to get back to sleep once awake. The other research shows that valerian has no statistically relevant effect on anything sleep related.
That was the problem – although there is a lot of research – it all contradicts one another. For every study that says it helps, there’s another that says it doesn’t.
So I think the prudent thing to do is to try it.
It’s been proven safe (the only “overdose” of valerian I could find resulted in stomach cramps) and it might just be effective for you. I would recommend taking it as a tea – because it would contain the whole root, and not some company’s idea of what the “active compound” is (and only including that in the pill).
There are a couple of extra items to note in my experience with the tea:
- it causes you to pee a few hours after you’ve had it – I had to adjust the time I took the tea at night to accommodate an extra bathroom stop before bed (I now take it at 8pm for an 11pm bedtime)
- it’s been reported that it may take a few weeks of use before you know if valerian root will work for you
So stick with it – if after six weeks or so you don’t notice any effect, then taking the root is personal preference. I’m only a few weeks into it, and there’s been nothing to report to date. But I’ll stick with it and see what happens.

How To Get Health Insurance

If you are out of work or self-employed, a major issue in doing your financial planning is how to get health insurance. Depending on your circumstances, you might have several options available within a range of costs.
Recently Unemployed: COBRA
If you have recently lost or left a job where you had health insurance, you might be eligible for COBRA health insurance. There’s two parts to figuring out if you’re eligible:

- Guaranteed issue. If you continue to pay the premiums, you cannot be terminated from the coverage for the eligible period. This can be important if you have a pre-existing medical condition.
Disadvantages of COBRA
- Cost. COBRA is expensive because you have to pay the full premium plus a 2 percent administrative fee. Most employers at least partially subsidize the cost of medical insurance while you’re working, so the bill can give you sticker shock.
- Limited eligibility period. In most circumstances, you can get COBRA health insurance for only 18 months after you leave your employer, so it’s not a long-term solution.
Married or Partnered Individuals
If you are married or have a domestic partner, you might be able to go on their insurance plan. Most group plans are required to allow changes mid-year (outside the annual Open Enrollment), and your losing your coverage should be what’s called a qualifying event for your spouse or partner.
Advantages
- Likely to cost less than COBRA.
- Benefits of a group plan.
- If you arrange it so you go on the new coverage just when your old coverage ends, you probably won’t have to worry about any pre-existing condition exclusions.
Disadvantages
- Sometimes the cost can be surprisingly high, depending on how the company calculates its share. Some employers will pay only for single coverage, and the employee has to pay for anything more.
- If you’re in a domestic partnership and not married, you might be out of luck. Depending on local law and the employer’s policies, you might not qualify. Even same-sex couples who married in a state such as Massachusetts or Iowa might find their relationship is not recognized for purposes of health benefits in another state.
Individual and Public Plans
There’s several other insurance options to consider for specific circumstances.
Individual Plans
Do your research if you take this route. Depending on your location, you might have many or few options. The federal government has a site at HealthCare.gov that will link you to state portals with information about the health insurance options available to you. You should also check with any professional groups you belong to – or even your alumni association – to see if they offer any insurance plans.
Individual insurance plans, particularly if you go with a high deductible or catastrophic plan, can be surprisingly reasonable for one person, although family coverage gets pricey. Any pre-existing medical conditions can also present problems: you could be turned down completely or not get coverage for that condition for a period of time.
Public Plans
